Audience Brokers and News Discoverers: The Role of New Media in the Digital News Domain

This study featured in the proceedings of IDP Conference in Barcelona 2016, tackles the power of new media and legacy organizations in the online domain. Using digital data and borrowing tools from network science, it shows that new media occupy relevant authority positions in the flow of news content and their role does not result from their audience reach. Rather it is their ability to be recognized as authoritative sources by their peers and their structural network connections that confer them with authority.
